Mental Health in Sport Is Finally Having Its Moment

Physical exercise is very beneficial for maintaining good health and well-being. This is not confirmed by us, but by qualitative scientific research.

According to the World Health Organization, depression is a common illness. It affects 5% of the adult population worldwide. One of the ways to prevent depression is to increase the level of activity. Research confirms the positive impact of sports on mental health. So, just 30 minutes of running on a treadmill is enough to cheer up a person who suffers from a serious depressive disorder. And according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine, this effect is observed even after a quiet walk.
Another interesting conclusion was made by researchers at Oxford and Yale universities: playing sports affects our sense of happiness even more than the size of the salary. A survey of more than 1.2 million people found that those who move regularly (even activities such as lawn mowing or intensive housework were taken into account) feel depressed much less often than those who are too lazy to exercise.

Activity improves sleep and promotes concentration

Sleep problems are common among residents of megacities. Instead of taking melatonin or attending expensive retreats, start running: it improves the quality of sleep and psychological state. This was shown by an experiment involving 51 young people (boys and girls): half ran at a moderate pace for 30 minutes a day for three weeks, while the rest excluded running from their daily routine. Of course, the running part of the subjects slept better.
Regular exercise is also known to increase productivity.

– Our body craves physical activity, although the brain can send the opposite signals. So to make the process more fun and regular, the brain releases fun chemicals like serotonin, endorphins, and dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter produced by the brain to nudge us into action. Thanks to dopamine, we are able to concentrate on one task and achieve results. To increase its level, light exercises are also suitable: jogging with a dog or climbing stairs. The main thing is that the training is regular.
