Recently, our long-term partner and supplier of all kinds of gadgets for the office, GearBest, sent Fan Ju portable weather station for review. How we dealt with this miracle of technology, why a weather station is at home and how it differs from a conventional thermometer – read the article.

What does it look like

The first impression when I was offered to take this gadget home and test it was distrust. It was not clear why a weather station was needed at all at home, what functions it performs, and why it costs $46 (2,615 rubles), which is exorbitant for any thermometer.

But already at the stage of unpacking the goods, I appreciated the design and conciseness of the gadget: instead of the expected wood-like plastic lining on the front of the station, there is a frame made of natural bamboo that is pleasant to the touch. On the reverse side there is a simple white plastic, but thanks to it the device is very light, only 600 grams.

The box includes: station, external weather sensor (installed outdoors and transmits data to the station), instructions and adapter for operation from a power outlet. By the way, there are no batteries in the kit: to complete the station, you will need 4 AA batteries – 2 for the station itself and 2 for the outdoor sensor.

The outdoor sensor can only be mounted on a self-tapping screw, while at the bottom there is a protruding element that will prevent the device from being tightly attached to the wall. You can, of course, just put the sensor somewhere on the balcony, but even a weak wind will easily overturn it (or take it away from the balcony, as in our case).

So, I found batteries, hung the sensor outside the window, turned on the station. To collect data for the forecast, the external sensor will take time, so for now let's read the instructions.

What does (read theory)

There were no instructions in Russian, only English and German. The instructions contain information about the completeness, the purpose of the station, safety information, an installation guide, an explanation of the meanings of the indicators and the technical characteristics of the gadget.

The home weather station shows various weather data (air temperature, pressure, humidity) and, based on this information, predicts the weather for the next 12-24 hours. Weather forecast accuracy – 75%.

The outdoor sensor (the one we have on the balcony, remember?) is equipped with a screen that shows the humidity and temperature. The temperature is displayed in Celsius or Fahrenheit, can be customized as desired.

At the station, in addition to temperature and humidity, there are indications of air pressure and, attention, the phases of the moon. Based on data from an external sensor, a weather forecast is created – that very beautiful picture in the center of the screen. The forecast has 7 options:

  • sunny;
  • light cloudy;
  • cloudy;
  • rain;
  • heavy rain;
  • light snowfall;
  • heavy snowfall.

The station also saves the maximum and minimum values of the indicators and displays trends for the near future.

I think the external sensor has already collected all the necessary data for the forecast. Okay, weather station, should I bring an umbrella with me tomorrow?

What it does (testing in the field)

In addition to the basic weather functions, the station allows you to set the date, time, day of the week (even in Russian) and set an alarm, which we did.

The screen brightness is adjustable in three positions. The largest button on the back of the station is used for adjustment. At the same time, if the gadget is powered by batteries, and not by sockets, the maximum brightness is maintained only for 15 seconds.

The manufacturer promises that when the temperature drops below 37° Fahrenheit (about 2.8° Celsius), an icing warning icon appears (we, alas, could not test this function in Krasnodar in 30-degree heat).

But most importantly, the forecast really works. After a few days, I got so used to this simple way to keep track of the weather that I stopped constantly opening the forecast on my phone. And when I had to return it to the office, it was a pity to leave, because the gadget, despite the skepticism at first, turned out to be simple and useful.

Bottom line: a very convenient and interesting gadget. Of course, you can get by with a standard thermometer outside the window or a weather forecast from the Internet, but the station has many additional features that will help maintain a comfortable temperature in the house, monitor air humidity and know in advance what the weather will be waiting for you outside. The price of the weather station in the GearBest store is 2,615 rubles. Would I buy myself one? Definitely yes 🙂
